9/28/2023 0 Comments Arch linux installation guide![]() ![]() Every single time I upgrade the firmware on my motherboard I have to boot from the live media and chroot into my system and re-install the bootloader so it shows up in the BIOS/boot menu in my motherboard. I'd be lying if I said it didn't take me a long time and a lot of trial and error to get the hang of the UEFI bootloader install process at first too. Don't direct new users to an article that lists fucking discontinued bootloaders! Give a good, generic default option as a baseline, and then link to an article to explain how to customize that to suit your needs if you're even more of a fucking nerd than your typical Arch user. ![]() ![]() Beginners don't need and don't want to make a bunch of choices up front when they have no basis on which to base their own opinions - sensible default suggestions (and maybe some hyperlinks to alternatives if it reasonable to guess some users who aren't already experts may be better served by those alternatives) make it easier for a new user to get familiar with the overall process without getting bogged down in the entire goddamn wiki, trying to parse out what information is even relevant to what they want to do. Yeah, it makes me feel like just having an opinionated beginner's guide, even if it means keeping two separate guides (beginner and advanced), is better. So I agree with the fact that the current article is confusing but it's mostly because of bad writing (information in the wrong sections) and editors clinging on opinionated "beginner friendly" information that turns out to be counter-productive. That being said, most confusing parts are the ones containing fluff for beginners (the mention of how to change VT to do different things in the Boot the live environment part for instance is a great example of a confusing paragraph leading to confusing articles at the wrong place: VT switching has nothing to do with booting a live usb). I agree that people tend to put hyperlinks in for the sake of it and that is confusing. The install guide is a hypertext doc that does a poor job of saying when a given branch may be relevant That has historically been the reason why this kind of initiatives have not really been successful in the past. The problem is simply lack of maintenance: a beginner's guide is fine, an outdated one is not. You can do it: ArchWiki has been very open about this kind of things. ![]()
